If you’re seeking a slice of paradise that feels untouched by time, let me introduce you to Mayto—a charming village tucked along the stunning coastline of Mexico’s Pacific Riviera. With its breathtaking beaches, vibrant wildlife, and warm local culture, Mayto is a treasure waiting to be uncovered.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of lounging on not just one, but two beautiful beaches in Mayto. The expansive Playa Mayto, with its soft sands and inviting turquoise waters, was a fantastic spot to soak up the sun. We even rented an ATV to explore the seemingly endless stretch of beach. Let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the wind in your hair while cruising along the shore—though I did manage to get a bit sunburned on my adventure!
While the beach is picturesque, it’s worth mentioning that the waves can be a little rough for swimming, so if you’re planning to take a dip, exercise caution. Just think of it as nature’s way of reminding you who’s in charge. The beach is stunning to look at, and while it may not be perfectly suited for swimming, it offers plenty of opportunities for long walks and enjoying the sound of the waves crashing against the shore.
We stayed in a spacious three-bedroom unit that felt like home. The place was immaculately clean (thank you, housekeeping!), although I must admit, the beds were on the firm side. Hard beds seem to be a rite of passage in Mexico, but hey, it’s all part of the experience! One of my favorite amenities was the pool—oh, what a delight! Peaceful and uncrowded, it was the perfect spot for lounging after a day of adventures. You could easily spend hours by the pool, sipping drinks and soaking up the sun. Plus, the hammocks scattered around offered the ideal setting for an afternoon nap. Just don’t forget your sunscreen; we wouldn’t want you waking up looking like a lobster!
Dining in Mayto was enjoyable—while the restaurant we visited didn’t exactly set my taste buds ablaze, the service was top-notch. The locals are incredibly friendly, and it’s easy to engage with them while exploring the colorful streets or visiting the local market. Sampling traditional Mexican cuisine is a must while you’re here; just be prepared for some strong flavors that might surprise you! You can find family-owned restaurants that offer authentic dishes, providing a true taste of local culture.
Beyond the beaches and food, Mayto is a haven for nature lovers. The surrounding ecosystems are brimming with wildlife, and I couldn’t resist joining a guided tour to learn about the incredible biodiversity. From mangrove forests to lush jungles, every corner of Mayto is filled with natural wonders waiting to be explored. And let’s not forget about the sea turtles! From June to December, you can witness these magnificent creatures nesting on the shore and even participate in turtle release programs. Seeing baby turtles make their way to the ocean? That’s an experience you’ll not soon forget. It truly feels like you’re witnessing nature’s miracle firsthand.
Mayto is conveniently located about 100 kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta, making it an easy drive through the charming town of El Tuito. Although public transportation options are limited, renting a car or hiring a private driver lets you explore at your leisure. Just remember to respect your surroundings while you’re there—littering is a no-go and keeping noise levels down helps preserve the tranquility of this beautiful area. The locals take great pride in their environment, and being mindful of your impact is a great way to show appreciation for this hidden gem.
Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, Mayto is an ideal destination for those looking to escape the chaos of everyday life. Its blend of natural beauty and authentic culture makes it worth every moment spent there. So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen (and maybe a beach ball), and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in this hidden gem on Mexico’s Pacific Riviera!
